Introducing the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 1975 Limited Edition
This titanium case pays homage to FA Porsche’s most minimalist Chronograph 1 design – now available without the need to own a car.
Unveiled tonight at a gala in conjunction with Hodinkee and the Swiss Watch Fair, the Chronograph 1 – 1975 Limited Edition is the latest addition to Porsche Design’s growing line-up. This watch is a classic and much-anticipated Porsche Design chronograph, but this time around, it’s not finished in black. While the black coating was revolutionary in 1972 and ultimately made the Chronograph 1 iconic, in a sense Porsche Design already offered an uncoated stainless steel model in 1975.
The 1975 Limited Edition follows in the footsteps of that uncoated vintage model. Instead of stainless steel, the modern version is made of glass-bead-blasted titanium, a clear upgrade. There's some history behind this choice, too: Porsche Design introduced its first watch with a titanium case in 1980. The same case material and finish was used for the modern Chronograph 1 that came before it, the 911 S/T version, though to buy it in 2023 you'll need to own a new 992-generation Porsche 911 S/T.

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was the first watch designed by Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche, the man who also designed the Porsche 911. If you're a regular here at Hodinkee, this is probably covered in our 101 quiz, but not many enthusiasts know about the various versions of the Chronograph 1, both vintage and modern—and that's okay.
Today's watch continues the classic style, from the matte black dial to the stark white accents. The bead-blasted titanium case and bracelet have a more industrial feel than the previous black-coated Chronograph 1. Inside is the Porsche Design Caliber WERK 01.240, a COSC-certified flyback chronograph movement. The case measures 40.8 mm in diameter and 14.15 mm in thickness, making it comfortable to wear, striking a balance between a statement on the wrist and comfort on the wrist. The flyback chronograph is both practical and clever. The date display window is available in both German and English, making it easy to read.
The strap features a folding clasp with fine adjustment and is embellished with the Porsche Design logo. The caseback features the Porsche Design logo and the words “1975” on both sides.
The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 1975 Limited Edition is released in conjunction with the brand’s new partnership with Swiss Watch Company, the parent company of Hodinkee. The watch debuts at the WoS SoHo flagship store, marking WoS’s official launch as the exclusive third-party retail partner for Porsche Design watches in the United States.
It’s no secret that you’re all big fans of Porsche Design, and the Chronograph 1 in particular. Our 2024 Chronograph 1 Limited Edition was designed to be a “perfect” update of the 1972 black-coated original, with minor tweaks and modernizations where necessary. The 1975 Limited Edition follows the same strategy, but is positioned as a slightly more niche vintage version. To be honest, it’s a product that’s been long overdue for Porsche Design enthusiasts – everything you want and everything you don’t want.
The 1975 watch goes beyond a tribute or a simple replica, going a step further with a titanium case and bracelet and a COSC-certified flyback chronograph movement. Stronger, lighter, more powerful – it’s the uncoated Chronograph 1 that FA Porsche designs today.

However, for those watch and car enthusiasts willing to look a little deeper, the careful tweaks to this iconic design have resulted in an unmistakable modern chronograph. The 1975 model is perhaps the simplest and most wearable example of the ever-growing Chronograph 1 family yet. No car to buy, no special logo on the dial – just great design and modern convenience.
